New Jersey Product Liability Lawyers weigh in on injuries caused by Britax jogging strollers. After several injuries to both children and adults, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has filed an administrative complaint against Britax Child Safety, Inc. due to a design defect that makes their jogging strollers unreasonably dangerous. The complaint was filed after Britax refused to recall the strollers from the market.

The CPSC seeks an order declaring that the strollers pose a substantial risk of injury, that Britax stop distributing certain models of its B.O.B. brand strollers, and for Britax to notify the public of the defect and provide them with a remedy or refund. The CPSC alleges that Britax has long been aware of the defect yet failed to act. Britax has not yet responded to the lawsuit.

Injuries from Strollers

According to the complaint, consumers have reported that injuries were caused when the front stroller wheel detached, at times causing the stroller to tip forward abruptly. Although these strollers are designed to be used while jogging, they are popular models for multi-purpose use, and the defect can occur while walking or jogging. The CPSC alleges that the strollers can be used when the front wheel is not properly secured, causing the wheel to detach from the front fork. When this happens, the fork can become lodged in the ground, causing the stroller to stop suddenly and tip over, throwing the child from the stroller.

Both children and adults have sustained injuries. The following are some of the injuries that have been reported:

Injuries to children:

  • Concussions
  • Injuries to the head and face requiring stiches
  • Contusions
  • Abrasions
  • Dental injuries

Injuries to adults:

  • Torn labrum
  • Bone fractures
  • Ligament tears

Between December 2011 and September 2015, Britax distributed close to half a million of these strollers. Since 2012, there have been at least 200 reports of front wheel detachments, and nearly one hundred injuries to adults and children.
