The woman who is an independent lead poisoning prevention advocate tested several various fidget spinners using an XRF instrument, which analyzes chemicals found in different substances. In total, she tested over 10 different spinners for the presence of lead and mercury. After she disassembled one spinner that featured LED lights, she found 19,000 parts per million (ppm) of lead and 1,000 ppm of mercury. Even the paint on this particular spinner contained over 300 ppm of lead and 155 ppm of mercury, and the unpainted metal base contained over 1500 ppm of mercury and nearly 2500 ppm of lead. Scientists deem 90 ppm of lead a safe level for toys. In another spinner, she discovered nearly 43,000 ppm of lead.

Fidget spinners feature prominently in the news today due to their popularity with children. Unfortunately, not only do they pose a distraction in schools, some spinners now appear to contain extremely high levels of lead, which could cause users of the toy to develop serious illnesses and medical conditions. In some cases, the health issues could lead to fatalities.
